In his blog post, Workplace Learning: Adding, Embedding & Extracting, Charles Jennings discusses three options for how learning and development professionals can help with learning in the workplace. Learning & development can help by:

  • Adding activities that explicitly focus on assisting with learning
  • Embedding the learning into the work and supporting performance at point-of-need
  • Extracting learning from work in an effort to have continuous performance improvement

Jennings cites After Action Reviews (AARs) used by the U.S. army as an example of a tool that could be used in any organization to extract learning through four simple questions:

  1. What did we set out to do?
  2. What actually happened?
  3. Why did it happen?
  4. What are we going to do next time?
